Treatment For Fibromyalia? Has Anyone Tried Gauifenesin & Avoiding Salicylates? Did It Help?
I have Full blown Fibromyalgia & have tried & still doing the best I can with my doctor’s care, but I have been reading a book that says to Avoid Salicylates & take Gauifenesin. That Salicylates block gauifenesin & gauifenesin helps your body remove phosphates from your body. Kidney are not working right & customarily friendly phosphates…there’s just too much of it in the wrong places. Actually it’s a book that details a treatment that reverses Fibromyalgia by avoiding salicylates & gauifenesin helps with this treatment. I tried the Gaufenesin after asking my doctor, who said he thought it would NOT hurt me & maybe help. But he also said I did NOT have to avoid salicylates. Nothing happened…. so I reread the book & it says, you must avoid salicylates in order for this treatment to work. If anyone out there has tried this treatment, please let me know. To avoid salicylates: lipsticks, mouthwashes, toothpaste, nasal sprays, plant oil, extract, teas,.

It’s hard to treat a psychosomatic disorder with pain relievers… Do what you want. If you think it will work, it will.

I’ve never heard of this before. Where can I find this information? Do you have really painful muscle spasms? From what I’ve been told there is no cure for this; only treatments such as moist heat, exercise, pain medication, etc. Nothing seems to help much. I had a bad night yesterday; no sleep at all. When I was going to physical therapy they used ultra sound on me & that helped but this is a life long problem that 3 months of treatment is not a cure all. How did you go about notifying me? I got an e-mail saying you were trying to contact me. How do you do that? I hope I can get some sleep tonight but right now my shoulder hurts so bad & upper back. The pain goes down my arm where it feels like it’s paralyzed. Get back to me about the book. ok?

A good friend of mine has fibro, & she goes to a fibromyalgia support group. I remember that she & her group tried this treatment last year – & it did not work at all on anyone in the group. They all said it was a HUGE waste of time & energy & money.
Have you read Devin Starlanyl’s book called Fibromyalgia & Chronic Myofascial Pain; A Survival Manual.
Everyone I know who has fibromyalgia says that this is the best book for understanding the fibro & for finding a treatment plan that works to keep them feeling their best.
Good Luck.

First off, to the answerer who stated that Fibromyalgia is a psychosomatic disorder, that is incorrect. Fibromyalgia is a real condition. There is research showing that there are physical differences between people who have Fibromyalgia & people who don’t. If you’re interested in information regarding Fibromyalgia research, check out the Fibromyalgia Network website listed below.
Ok, now that’s off my chest – I have not tried Dr. St. Armand’s guaifenisen protocol, but I have read his book. He is very adamant about avoiding salicylates for his treatment to be effective. There was a study done in the mid-90’s that showed that guaifenisen was no more effective than a placebo in treating Fibromyalgia. So, the news may not be all that good for this treatment. I’m including link below to a summary of the study.
I find that the newletter from the Fibromyalgia Network is helpful for staying current on research & treatment options. Membership in the Fibromyalgia Network is $28 per year & includes a subscription to the quarterly newletter. Plus, you can order back issues of the newletters, so if you check out their list of past issues & see something interesting, you can order a copy for a relatively nominal fee OR you can order multiple back issues for a discount. The link for their site is included below. In addition the newsletter, the website has lots of helpful information. There is a list of common treatments (follow the Basic Info link on the left side of the page) as well as a list of helpful dietary supplements (Go to the Resources link & select Consumer Alerts).
Hope this helps!
